LISSAJOUS
All pieces are 2022.
Each piece features Lissajous curves, which are linear forms that plot harmonic motion. Several of the pieces were exhibited at the Nine Gallery in Portland, OR in 2022.
The paintings are done in layers. The first layer is created using a pendulum to draw Lissajous forms on paper. The pendulum oscillates and the resulting lines follow a pattern of harmonic motion determined by the laws of physics. They're the same types of patterns as seen in an oscilloscope. The second layer is created with inks, sometimes in washes and sometimes in drips and splatters. The third layer is collage elements, using geometric shapes I create on a computer.
The combination of lines made using an instrument, the expressive and sometimes chaotic ink washes, and the computer-generated geometries results in interesting juxtapositions. The works are primarily abstract, yet convey a sense of place, like looking into a world that could be under the sea, on an alien planet, or on a microscope slide. I enjoy the intertwining of the unpredictable and the carefully arranged, with the digital forms acting as foils for the colorful abandon of the fluid marks. I like mixing chaos and order.
